Awesome. I am thinking about a low head setup for my waterfall on my property. My falls are only about 12-14 feet tall. and not much elevation change after that. There once was a grist mill and saw mill right on my property all powered by the waterfall and creek. Pretty similar to Ben’s Mill here on you tube. I have alot to learn before I get started. Thanks for sharing
I don’t see the most recent post from SargeantRC about how to design in very cold climates… but its done all the time. Depends on whether the water source freezes completely or not. Also depends on whether you’re willing to go to the expense/hassle of insulating pipe and/or turbine, but it’s doable in many cases. Need more info. I think you are asking how to maintain 60 hertz constantly, right? If so, we rectify the AC output to DC, run DC to a controller, then to an inverter to make it AC again. Seems to be the easiest way to do it. cheers.

425 W X 24 hours a day (which you can’t get from solar) equals more than 10kw a day. Plenty for microwave, power tools, TV and stereo, electric fridge and freezer, tea jug and cappuccino maker. We’ve built a house with no gas/diesel generator smelling and noising up the place, not to mention the cost and pollution. Not bad.

If you mean on YouTube, you can turn down the volume either on the site or on your computer. If you mean along the river, it’s not as loud as it sounds…the microphone is right next to the rotor in the video. You can barely hear it from 15 feet away.

I know it doesn’t sound like much, but with my PV array I make ~7kWh / day on average. Plenty for me/wife/dogs/horse.

hello al im looking for info on micro hydro power .i have a cottage in remote part of ireland i use oil lamps and stuff ,but i have a stream on the land with plenty of water ,im looking to harness the stream to create power to run the cottag any help would be greatly appreciated
Nice! I have been off-grid for 7 years in Vermont. I have an ES&D Stream Engine and PV as well. My micro turbine is making 170W, it is not the low head version. I have made a wireless monitoring device for it which stands alone or can be connected to my computer. I wanted to be able to catch it if it starts to freeze up or if I have silt buildup on the intake.
Up to 15.5 amps on a 24V system (when pushing against full batteries…make that 28.3V) for a total of up to 425 watts.
